Malta is often called a “toy-country”: there are no mountains, nor rivers here, and sometimes even 2 or 3 streets are considered to be a city. Still, Malta is annually visited by over 1 million tourists from all over the world. This unique miniature country has unbelievably rich history which is full of mysteries. Malta is also well-known for its hospitable people and marvelous sights.

The Three Cities Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea

The Three Cities: Maltese history in miniature

One of the most popular tourist attractions in «toy-country» are considered to be The Three Cities – the cradle of Maltese history. If you look at the map of Malta, you’ll see three small peninsulas on the south from Valetta. These are Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea or, if speaking about ancient names, Il-Birgu, Bormla and L-Isla, respectively. To put it short, these are The famous Three Cities.

There are a lot of churches in these Three Cities, which, by the way, represent the only place in Europe where you can see forts with double-rowed stone walls.

Speaking about Vittoriosa, it should be mentioned that it has an unbelievably beautiful waterfront, moreover, it can boast of having Fort St. Angelo on its territory – one of the oldest and greatest Maltese fortifications. Numerous palaces and churches of Vittoriosa remind of Knights which had their first shelter here. Top 3 places (apart from Fort St. Angelo) to see in Vittoriosa are considered to be the Inquisitor’s Palace, the Church of San Lawrenz and the Maritime Museum.

The largest of The Three Cities – Cospicua – has also something interesting for tourists to offer. Despite the city suffered a lot from World War II bombings, it managed to save the Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception, Margherita Lines and the Firenzuola Fortifications.

Senglea, in turn, is the smallest of The Three Cities, but still, it is not the less popular one. The most visited sights of Sengela are considered to be The Parish Church, the Safe Haven Gardens with superb Great Harbor views and the famous stone vedette “il-Gardjola”.

Despite the territory of the “toy-country” is only 122 sq. miles, there are a lot of 3-5 star hotels in Malta. But if you want to visit The Three Cities, you may choose the nearest hotels in Valetta – the capital of Malta.

One more important thing all tourists should know planning their trips to this wonderful country and The Three Cities in particular – Malta weather forecast is always nice, as it doesn’t know what are cold wind, snow, frost and fog. So, be ready to meet sunny mood and unforgettable impressions in Malta!
